Cherie Currie
Interview with The Runaways Vocalist
When looking at the Cherry Bomb video with you wearing a push up bra, corset and fishnets became a symbol of recognition with your fans but for you was it a way to show your bebellous side?
No, it was that voice that everyone should listen to in their heads, we had just finished doing a soundcheck at the Starwood and I walked outside and directly across the street was this little shop I guess for women’s underwear. But the was a single corset in that shop and I saw it from across the street and was drawn to it. I ended up going in there after soundcheck, trying it on and we are talking back in 1976, before The Runaways had even started. I put it on and I thought for Cherry Bomb this is what I have to wear so I bought it. I then had Kym Fowley and Scott Anderson come over to my place and I put it on and walked out in corset and fishnets and said this is what I want to wear for Cherry Bomb. And they said ‘Oh my God, Yes”. I knew it was going to be a big problem for the other girls though but it was for one song.
Obviously The Runaways are known for the song Cherry Bomb which is a shame as there are so many other awesome songs that came out of the band. Did that always worry you?
We were teenage girls and girls were not in the music industry at that time, Suzi Quatro yes. We were in unchartered territory at that time so all I knew was that I was a long for the ride. I had no idea what we were even doing and all I knew was that I had to show up and it was everyday whether it was rehearsal or being the studio or photography or interviews, it never ended. We never had a break the entire time I was in the Runaways. So you can’t ask me what the deal was as I did what I was supposed to do.
The song itself which has been well documented was written by Joan Jett and Kim Fowley as an audition song for you and a play on words to your name. But how did you define the lyrics and what they meant to you?
That’s the one thing about The Runaways movie I didn’t like. Joan Jett and Kym Fowley showed up at the Sugar Shack asked if I could sing or play an instrument, I told them I could sing a little. They gave me an adress to go and audition and asked me to learn a Suzi Quatro song. I learnt Fever because I come from a background of like The Andrew Sisiters and Dean Martin. When I showed up I told them that I had learned Fever and the girls were not impressed. Kym Fowley turned to Jon and said “You come with me” They dissappeared for about 20 minutes and came back with Cherry Bomb. I ended up writing the melody as there was no melody.
